How is uveal melanoma diagnosed?
Uveal melanoma may cause blurry vision or a shadow in one's vision. Alternatively uveal melanoma may not cause any symptoms and may simply be detected by an eye doctor on a routine eye exam. A dilated eye exam is necessary.
Upon referral to an eye doctor experienced with uveal melanoma, the patient will undergo a detailed dilated eye exam. During the dilated eye exam, the "length and width" or "basal dimensions" of the tumor can be estimated. The physician will perform either detailed drawings of the melanoma and/or take special photos. In addition, an ultrasound (known as a "B scan") is performed to measure the thickness of the tumor.
